After photographing couples throughout Central Texas, I’ve learned that the best sessions start with a spot that feels true to you, not just a pretty backdrop. This is a chance to slow down, walk together the way you always do, and let the whole thing feel less like a photoshoot and more like an afternoon spent with someone who already feels like a friend. Below, I’m sharing my favorite engagement session locations around Austin, along with the details you’ll want to know before booking.

Austin Engagement Session Locations I Love

Since making Austin my home a few months ago, I’ve been getting out to explore as many corners of the city as I can! These three locations are where I’ve spent the most time so far, walking the trails, learning the light, and getting to know every detail alongside real couples. I’d rather know a place well than recommend somewhere just because it looks pretty online, so as I keep exploring, this list will keep growing. Here’s where I’ve been shooting lately, along with everything you’ll want to know before booking your own session.

Lady Bird Lake Hike & Bike Trail / Wishbone Bridge

Nature abounds along this stretch of trail. The city has invested a lot into the area, planting sunflowers along the path that make for some of my favorite backdrops in the spring and summer. Wishbone Bridge itself gives you a beautiful vantage point over the water, especially as the light starts to shift in the early morning or evening.

There are so many sweet places to stop along the way, whether that’s a quiet bench tucked beneath a tree, a stretch of trail lined with wildflowers, or a spot right at the water’s edge where the skyline peeks through in the distance. It’s an especially meaningful choice for couples who want a natural setting with lake views, and because it’s a walking trail, we get to move and explore together rather than staying in one static spot the whole time.

Laguna Gloria

Laguna Gloria brings old-world European charm, with manicured grounds and lake views throughout the property. I love walking the grounds with couples and finding little pockets of the garden that feel almost secluded, tucked behind hedges or framed by the old stone architecture.

If Texas heat has you worried, the mansion itself is air conditioned, and there’s a beautiful sun room worth stepping into for a few frames, with soft natural light pouring in through the windows. The lawn sloping down toward the water is one of my favorite spots for a wide, romantic shot, and the mansion’s exterior gives us a more elegant, timeless backdrop if you’d like a mix of natural and architectural settings in your gallery. This location does require a permit for use. Reservations go quickly, so I recommend booking through the Contemporary Austin’s website as soon as your date is set.

Waterloo Park

Waterloo Park is part park, part city. It gives the best of both worlds for Austinites who love where they live. It’s new, lush, and full of winding paths, with open lawns, native plantings, and shaded pockets that change the feel of your photos from one turn to the next.

I love that you can catch a skyline view in one corner and feel completely tucked into nature just a few steps later. It happens to be dog-friendly too, if your best friend wants to join in on the fun, and there’s enough variety packed into one park that we rarely need to drive anywhere else to get a full gallery of different looks.

Best Time of Day to Shoot Engagement Photos

I typically recommend either sunrise or sunset for the softest, most flattering light, generally starting about thirty minutes after sunrise or beginning around two hours before sunset. Both of these times allow for good directional light, and the sun isn’t too high in the sky, making it less harsh. In the summer months especially, sunrise is a wonderful option for staying cool during the early morning hours. At Laguna Gloria, the main photo area behind the building faces west, so mornings tend to bring softer, more ideal light there.

A Few More Austin Locations For Your Engagement Session

Beyond the three locations above, here are a few more of my favorite Austin spots worth having on your list, each one with its own personality and photo opportunities:

South Congress/Austin Motel/”I love you so much” Sign

This stretch is perfect for iconic city imagery. Having your photo taken in front of the “I love you so much” mural at Jo’s Coffee is a can’t-miss moment for a South Congress session, and just up the street, the Austin Motel’s retro neon sign is another one of the most recognizable backdrops in the city. With chic side streets and bistro lights tucked throughout the area, it’s full of layers and gives your gallery a completely different feel from a park or garden setting. If you’d like to add an edgy, night-life feel to your photos, we can tuck into a nearby restaurant or bar for a few frames as the sun goes down.

Butterfly Bridge

Near the central location of the Austin Public Library, this bridge offers a very cool architectural backdrop. With the city’s high-rise buildings in the background, and a trail throughout – we can get multiple views on and around the bridge. The surrounding landscaping just adds to the charm!

The Texas State Capitol Grounds

This area has beautiful architecture, manicured lawns, and shade trees. It’s the perfect mixture of a variety of backdrops in one location.

South Side of Lady Bird Lake

A boat rental on the lake would be so dreamy! There are gorgeous opportunities along the south side of the shoreline and pedestrian bridges for great city views.

Commodore Perry Estate

This location has gorgeous old-world charm, stunning grounds and gardens, and a pool with iconic yellow and white striped umbrellas. Commodore Perry does require a reservation and permit to use their grounds.

One Tip for Choosing Your Location

If I could offer just one tip, it would be this: choose a location that is meaningful to you. If you trust your photographer and they’re a pro, they will find the beautiful nooks and crannies and gorgeous light in the place you love, no matter what.

When you only choose a spot because it’s pretty or popular for engagement sessions on social media, you won’t have any emotional tie to the place. And that’s fine, but you’ll be losing an opportunity to bring more meaning to your images. By choosing a place you love, the images will hold meaning beyond being pretty pictures of the two of you. They’ll be that much more special to you. Plus, being at a location that is comfortable and familiar will help you feel at ease, and you’ll get more comfortable in front of the camera more quickly. This will always shine through in your photos.

Think about where you met, where you got engaged, where you love to go to relax together on the weekends, your vacation spot, your nightly walks, etc. The best spots hold meaning, not just beauty.

What to Wear for Your Engagement Session

Above all, I suggest choosing something you feel comfortable and confident in, since that comfort shows in the photos. You do not want to wear something that you’re constantly pulling on or adjusting. I also recommend avoiding bright, bold colors close to your face, since they tend to cast onto your skin and shift the mood of an image. Soft, pastel tones tend to photograph beautifully without any color casting. Always choose colors and patterns that compliment each other, rather than clash. And because movement is such a key part of a natural, effortless feel, flowing pants, dresses, and tops help bring elegance and motion into your images. A good gauge is to ask yourself if you look like you’re headed to the same event.

How Long Sessions Take

Sessions typically run 60 to 90 minutes and can stretch up to two hours, depending on how many locations and outfits you’d like to include. I usually recommend two outfits, one a bit dressier than the other, for the most variety in your gallery. If you’re set on two locations, choose spots within ten minutes of each other, so more of your time is spent taking photos rather than driving between them.

Answers to the Questions I Hear Most

Do we need to bring anything for our session?

Not necessarily, unless you’d like to add a bit of elevated styling to part of your session. Think simple and natural, tied to the setting. That might mean a small picnic basket with fruit and cheese to enjoy on a cute blanket, or a bottle of bubbles to share in champagne flutes. A stop at your favorite coffee shop or a book you both love reading can be just as meaningful. Styling should stay minimal to avoid crossing into cheesy territory, but a few thoughtful touches that resonate with you as a couple can help create authentic moments and evoke genuine emotion in a beautiful way.

Should I get my hair and makeup done professionally?

If your timeline and location allow it, I highly recommend using your engagement session as an excuse to pamper yourself! It’s a wonderful opportunity for a trial run before your wedding day, and having your makeup done professionally means it will photograph beautifully and help you feel confident. Loving how you look often means loving your images even more.

We’re awkward in front of the camera. Can you make us look natural?

Absolutely! I’ll prompt and walk you through the entire session, and naturally posed portraiture is my specialty. My focus is on having the two of you interact with one another and bringing genuine movement and connection into the frame. When you look at your person, your expression shifts, and you can’t help but feel more genuine and relaxed. I will also ask questions like, “How do you walk together when you’re on a date night?” and “Do you hold hands, put your arms around each other’s waists?. Chances are, you have walked together the same way throughout your whole relationship and will be for the next 50 years together. So I want you to walk like that for your session so that when you look back at the images, they feel authentic.

Have you shot at this location before?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no, but honestly, it doesn’t matter. I find the most creativity and excitement in new places. Every season and time of day changes the lighting conditions, so even a familiar spot can feel brand new depending on when we shoot there.

Why take engagement photos at all?

Engagement sessions are a wonderful way to get to know your photographer and feel comfortable with posing before your wedding day.
