Summers in Texas are stunning…golden light, warm evenings, and an energy that makes for truly unforgettable celebrations. They are also, let’s be honest, hot. As an Austin, TX wedding photographer who has documented countless summer weddings, I’ve seen firsthand how a little planning ahead makes all the difference between a day that feels effortless and one that feels like a race against the heat. Whether you’re tying the knot in the Texas Hill Country or celebrating right here in the city, these seven tips will help you stay cool, look incredible, and stay fully present for every single moment.

In this post, you’ll find:

  • How to set up your getting-ready space for comfort from the start
  • Why a cushioned timeline is your best friend in the summer heat
  • The products that keep shine and sweat from showing up in your photos
  • A simple wardrobe tip that can save the day for anyone in a suit
  • How to strategically cool down between portrait locations
  • Why hydration is non-negotiable on a long wedding day
  • Why actually eating on your wedding day matters

1. Get Ready in a Space That Is Cool, Spacious, and Well-Lit

Getting ready on your wedding morning is one of my favorite things to document…the energy in the room, the quiet moments, the laughter, the finishing touches. But when the space is cramped, stuffy, or still warming up from the Texas heat, that energy shifts fast. A little planning here goes a long way.

You’ll want a room that has been air conditioned since early morning, not one you’re trying to cool down once everyone arrives. Closing the shades early helps, but plan for your photographer (hi, it’s me!) to let that beautiful natural light in upon arrival. The goal is a space that stays comfortable even with open curtains and a full getting-ready crew. Don’t be shy about asking your hotel or venue about the AC situation before you commit. It matters more than most couples expect, and the right space makes everything feel calmer and more intentional from the very start of the day.

2. Build Cushion Into Your Timeline

Heat and stress are a combination no one wants on their wedding day. Weddings are already emotionally full days. When you add in high temperatures and a rushed timeline, and it’s a recipe for feeling frazzled rather than present. Work with your planner and vendor team to build in extra time between each part of the day. A relaxed, cushioned timeline means you’re never rushing, never sweating through a transition, and never missing the small moments because you were too focused on the clock. It’s always better to be relaxed, calm, and present with no worries about a timeline.

3. Pack Blotting Strips and Handkerchiefs

Humidity and heat will bring shine, and shine shows up in photos. To avoid smearing makeup and glistening in a way you don’t love, blotting strips are a game-changer. They’re small enough for a wedding party member to carry in a bag or pocket, and you press rather than wipe so your makeup stays exactly where it should be. For anyone who isn’t navigating makeup, a classic handkerchief works beautifully for controlling sweat and unwanted shine. Have a few stashed with a trusted member of your wedding party and you’ll thank yourself later. These blotting strips are a personal favorite for hot summer wedding days.

4. Pack an Extra Shirt

Wearing a lightweight dress in the summer is far more forgiving than layering up in a full suit or tuxedo, and in unforgiving Texas heat – anyone in a suit will sweat. It’s not a matter of if, but when. To avoid the discomfort of a damp shirt and wet patches halfway through your day, pack a fresh one. After portraits or the ceremony, as you transition into cocktail hour, a quick change into a fresh shirt will make you feel good as new! And remember, if you see the sweat on your shirt or suit, the camera will too. A fresh shirt is a small thing that protects both your comfort and your images in a big way.

5. Step Inside to Cool Down Between Photos

One thing I always encourage my couples to think about is how to use the spaces around them intentionally throughout the day – not just for photos, but for their own comfort. Whether it’s the venue, a hotel lobby, your transportation, or even sticking close to the bus if you’re shooting in a public location, having a cool space to retreat to makes a real difference over the course of a long summer day.

Family members can step inside and cool off while wedding party portraits happen, and vice versa. With a little extra cushion in the timeline, the two of you can do the same between portrait locations. It keeps energy high, keeps everyone comfortable, and means your photos reflect how you actually feel – present, relaxed, and cool.

6. Drink Plenty of Water

This one sounds obvious, but it genuinely gets forgotten in the middle of a full wedding day. Staying hydrated keeps you feeling well, keeps energy steady, and makes it possible to keep celebrating late into the evening. Stock water bottles somewhere accessible for your wedding party and make it a priority from the moment you wake up. And if you really want to set yourself up well, especially in the Texas heat, throw some electrolyte packets in your getting-ready bag. Sweating all day depletes more than just water, and electrolytes help you actually absorb and hold onto the hydration you’re taking in. Your body and your photographer will both thank you!

7. Actually Eat on Your Wedding Day

You would be surprised how many couples make it to cocktail hour running on nothing but adrenaline and a sip of champagne. On a regular day that might be fine…but on a long, hot Texas summer wedding day, it catches up with you fast. Make a plan ahead of time to actually eat breakfast, and ask your planner or a trusted member of your wedding party to make sure food makes it to you during the day. Your energy, your mood, and honestly your photos will all reflect how well you’ve taken care of yourself. A couple that feels good looks good, and I want both for you.

One More Thing from Your Austin, TX Wedding Photographer

Every single one of these tips comes from years of being by couples’ sides on their wedding days – watching what helps them feel relaxed, present, and genuinely themselves. The couples who arrive at their wedding day well-rested, well-fed, and well-prepared are the ones who are fully in it. And that is exactly what makes for beautiful, timeless images.
