For the couple who loves old-world charm, here are 8 European-inspired wedding venues in New England that will help your guests feel like they’ve been transported abroad without the travel. There is something undeniably romantic about the architecture and carefully curated gardens of European cities and country estates. I think that in addition to the beauty of moss-covered stone and ornate renaissance-style buildings the history that these places hold is what is most inspiring. The love stories, adventures, and lives lived out over generations in a French chateau or Italian villa are memorialized in the art on the walls and in the pieces of furniture that get passed down. For me, as a history lover, nothing quite compares to the character that comes with time.
In the United States we’re young in comparison to Europe. A young nation that simply hasn’t had the time – and maybe has also lacked the interest – to preserve the past in the same way. So, finding venues here in New England that embrace the beauty of European destinations can be difficult. But there are several that are doing just that. In fact, New England is relatively rich with European-inspired wedding venues. There are more than the eight I highlight in this blog post, but these are a few favorites of mine. If you’re a couple who loves the historic charm of Europe, you’ll want to check out these wedding venues for your celebration.
1. Rosecliff
Located in Newport, Rhode Island, Rosecliff is the perfect spot for anyone inspired by Versailles. This French Baroque-inspired location features Beaux-Arts architecture and gilded interiors. The beautifully painted ceiling and ornate architectural details throughout the ballroom will transport your guests to Versailles in a heartbeat! Outside, there are stunning ocean views from the back lawn and terrace. And lush gardens, flank the front and side yards – all perfect locations for portraits.
I had the pleasure of being the second photographer for my friend Katherine Brackman. So, I got to capture these images and see the beauty of a Rosecliff wedding for myself.
2. Crane Estate
Crane Estate is an Italian Renaissance-style mansion located on the North Shore in Ipswich, Massachusetts. It features rolling lawns, incredible gardens, and gorgeous ocean views on 2,100 acres. If time allows on your wedding day, you can even make your way to the beach for a bonus set of portraits together. All this to say that this is the spot for you if you love historic charm or are planning a garden-inspired wedding. Modeled after European palaces and grounds, this multi-tiered estate dotted with sculptures and busts, is the epitome of elegance everywhere you look. And they allow engagement sessions on the property as well! The photos below are from a Fall session with one of my sweet 2024 couples.
3. Glen Magna Farms
Glen Magna Farms is another historic estate located on the North Shore of MA, this time in Danvers. Inspired by English country estates and gardens, this is an ideal location for an elevated garden party wedding with a touch of European charm. The lush and verdant gardens are the perfect backdrop for your ceremony and portraits and they are lovingly cared for and look beautiful from May to October. The house has beautiful suites that feel absolutely timeless for getting ready before your ceremony – one with a four-post bed and decorative fireplace. The large covered porch is also a perfect built-in rain plan for portraits.
4. The Mount
For those who enjoy French and Italian influences or love Edith Wharton’s novels, The Mount in Lenox, Massachusetts, is for you! Originally Edith Wharton’s country estate, this location is bright and airy inside and out. From the stately mansion to the formal gardens and a tree-lined lane that brings you straight to the Tuileries in Paris, this location is sophisticated and ideal for a crisp take on old-world style.
5. Aldworth Manor
This Harrisville, New Hampshire venue is just two hours outside of Boston and is inspired by Italian villas. The manicured lawns and rustic charm make Aldworth Manor the perfect location for a wedding that will feel like you’ve stumbled into the Italian countryside. And being nestled in the White Mountains, you’ll have beautiful views that remind you you’re still in New England.
6. Glen Manor House
Glen Manor House is a French-style chateau on the water in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. Stone walls, turn of the century decor, and views of the water make this the perfect venue for a romantic fairy tale wedding that feels like you’re in the French countryside – except with ocean views! In addition, there is also a covered portico that’s great for a rain plan if needed and makes for stunning photos no matter the weather!
7. Hildene
Hildene is a timeless, elegant venue in Manchester, Vermont. It is the former summer home of Robert Todd Lincoln and is inspired by English country estates. It features a grand mansion and sprawling gardens with mountain views. The property is gorgeous, and I’m manifesting this one. Although I haven’t had the opportunity yet, I would absolutely LOVE to photograph a wedding here!
8. Tupper Manor
This French Beaux-Arts design was built in the early 20th century. Tupper Manor is located in Beverly, Massachusetts and is technically owned by Endicott College. The bright enclosed terrace features floor-to-ceiling windows for a dreamy dining experience. And it enters onto a ballroom for dancing the night away. Plus, a fountain serves as the focal point of your ceremony. And a short path leads to beach access for portraits by the water!
I was second photographer for this wedding with my talented friend Jessica K. Feiden!
I hope that these 8 European-inspired wedding venues in New England help you feel inspired to plan your dream wedding!
